Literary Analysis of Mary Poppins
It was a bright, sunny day when Mary Poppins arrived. There was a huge line of women waiting to be interviewed by Mr. Banks to become his nanny. Mary Poppins wouldn’t have that, of course. With her magical powers she blew all the rest of the nannies away before anyone could see them. Then, she came down with her magical umbrella and knocked on the door to apply to become Mr. Banks kid’s nanny. In the thrilling movie, “Mary Poppins” by P.L. Travers, this is just one of the very creative things Mary Poppins does. “Mary Poppins” obviously follows the romantic mode of literary because the plotline, the characteristics, and the symbolism all fit perfectly!
The symbolism for “Mary Poppins” fits very well in the romantic mode of literature. In the beginning of the movie it starts out with Mary Poppins in the morning with birds chirping and the beautiful spring weather. It reminds you of the first, beautiful day of spring after a long cold winter. Mary Poppins, then, walks into a huge mansion decorated with beautiful drapes and stunning decorations. The mansion is a romantic symbol because that’s something that seems better than it really is. Usually an average person doesn’t have a huge mansion that. Also there was a lot of white involved and light blue which are colors that are softer and give the feeling of peacefulness and serenity.
Although the symbolism fits in very well with the romantic mode of literature, the plotline fits in very well also. The family starts off not having a nanny because the former nanny quit. That was defiantly a minor conflict which was only the beginning of the Romantic plotline. The Romantic plotline ends with life symbolism which there is a lot of at the end of this movie. First, Mary Poppins becomes Mr. Banks kid’s nanny full time! The kids are overly excited about that because of her thrilling adventures. Also, Mr. Banks becomes very happy and nice. He now loves his children and respects them very much unlike before when he just gave them away to a nanny and was very grumpy and was very boring. It turned out Mary Poppins coming to the house was just what the family needed.
While the plotline of the Romantic mode of literature fits very well, the characteristics are the most important thing. “Mary Poppins” first of all is very unrealistic. The character Mary Poppins has many magical powers. She can fly and jump into pictures and all kinds of stuff! That, as we all know, can’t happen in real life. Also, “Mary Poppins” is a fantasy vision because it contains unrealistic characters and situations! She talks to animals and has exciting adventures every day. There isn’t really a bad guy that is against Mary Poppins at all. She is very powerful and in control. Mary Poppins, you could say, controls the whole movie! Also the whole movie seems better than real life because there is a lot of magic happening and no one is really sad or mad. Everyone is happy!
The movie “Mary Poppins” is a magical, exciting, fun, movie that fantasies life as we know it. Her magical powers make us seem that her life is the greatest. “Mary Poppins” visibly follows the Romance mode of literature because of the plotline, characteristics, and symbolism. It turns out to be an excellent movie to watch!
