Essay Response From Book

The House on the Golf Essay Response
By Kaitlin Bates
What if you lived in a total stranger’s house for a summer and the owners came back not knowing who you are? This is exactly what happened to Marcus family one summer.  They had such a wild adventure in this book. The House on the Gulf by Margret Haddix turned out to be a thrilling story about a family and a problem. It was so exciting I couldn’t put it down.

First off, I have a connection to this book. I can really relate to a character in this book named Britt. I can relate to her because in the book her brother (Bran) had a huge secret.  He was hiding from his own family, even his mom. It was horrible. I once thought my brother was hiding something as big as that but it turned out it was just a surprise for my birthday. Although, Britt’s story wasn’t as small as my story it still had similar connections. It turns out Britt’s brother was hiding something about their family history but he was very wrong about it. He secretly moved the family into this house he thought was their grandparents but he was wrong. The owner of the house died so his wife came back to see a couple of strangers in their house. It was a mess. However my story was not as significant and important as that.

While my connection had a big impact to the story, there were definitely some lessons learned in the story. One lesson learned was, don’t always trust someone. This is one of the lessons learned because when Britt’s brother was hiding the secret about the house, Britt knew he was up to something but she just couldn’t figure it out. It had a big effect on me because I learned a lot from the book.  For example I learned that you really need to know someone to trust them. For instance, Britt found out she didn’t know her brother as well as she hoped. Also, there is another lesson. It is everyone has secrets. For example, Britt knew that her brother was hiding something. She could tell by all the hints Bran was dropping and he didn’t even know it.

As you can see The House on the Gulf was an excellent book and mystery to read. It was actually one of favorites. I had connections with it and saw the lessons. Britt’s brother was hiding a big secret and Britt figured it out. I had a similar relation. Now all I’m wondering is what I would do if this same huge scenario happened to me. Hmm…
