Essay Response

Essay Response to Papa’s Parrot

Your child just came into your candy store.  He was with all his friends. They had walked from school, just to come to your candy store. This was the best part of your day. But then, your child grows to be a teenager and he thinks he doesn’t need you anymore. Your life gets worst. This is what happens in the short story, Papa’s Parrot.  Papa’s Parrot by Cynthia Rylant turned out to be such a touching story that I dislikes and likes about.

To begin with, there were some things I really liked about Papa’s Parrot. I first liked the plotting of the story. I liked how as I read on I learned the lesson. For example, when I was reading the part where Harry didn’t go into his dad’s candy shop anymore, I kind of got the feeling something was going on.  Another part I liked was the introduction to the short story. I really liked how it started out because the author gave us lots of information about what is going to happen. For instance, when he told all about Harry and his friends walking to his candy shop from school. Another example is when the author told us what had happened in the past years and what has changed. I really liked that. Also, I liked the characters in the short story. I especially liked the parrot because I thought he was funny and he told Harry when he went into the candy shop, that his dad missed him.
Even though I liked a lot of things about Papa’s Parrot, I also disliked some things.  I first disliked how the book ended. It didn’t really have a conclusion to the story. The author just told us what he was going do, not how the short story turns out. I felt there should be more to the conclusion than just one little sentence. For example, the last sentence was “Then he left to go visit his papa” (Page 442). I felt that, this sentence just didn’t give any information. Also, another dislike I have is in the middle of the story I had a bit confusion. I had this confusion because I didn’t like how the author wrote some things. For instance, when the bird said “Hello, Rocky” (Page 440), I didn’t really get who was saying it because the bird’s name is Rocky, so there was a bit confusion

As you can see, I have dislikes and likes about Papa’s Parrot. However, it turned out to be really great short story to read. I mostly liked the story though because of the lesson.  I had some dislikes too but those were only minor.  Also, I really connected with the story.  It really gave me something to think about afterward.
