Tired of School?

Authors Note: This is a persuasive letter to the principal of Kaitlin Bates’s school. She is writing about why school should start later in the day.

Dear Mr. Daul,
Hello Mr. Daul.I have an interesting fact to share with you today. After some research and a couple of surveys, I found that 78% of all students said it was hard to get up in the morning. As you can this is a big problem for students. School starts early in the morning every week, but students struggle with waking up. There are a lot of reasons why school should start later but there are 3 most important reasons that stand out over the others.
The first reason school should start later is all about the kids. After a long weekend of hanging with friends and going to bed late, Monday morning bright and early they have to go to school. This is a problem for children, young, and old, because almost all of them in the morning are tired and very sleepy. Once the kids get to school, they wake up a little because of the excitement of being with their friends but their body is still in sleep mode. Because the kids are the tired they don’t focus on their school work. They write down their best guess and put their head on their desk. If school started later the kids would be well rested and ready to work on their school papers and have fun with them. Also, the kids will act different and have better behavior if they get enough sleep.
While kids being lazy are a big reason why school should start later, teachers being tired is also an important explanation to why school should start later. Even though it’s hard to admit it, teachers sometimes do get lazy because of lack of sleep. They hand out just a simple worksheet that another teacher gave to them because they forgot to make a lesson plan the day before. They complain about their lives and act tired. If school started later, they would be a jumble of joy and would have fun activities for their students to do and be a really good teacher. In addition, since the teachers did not get a lot of sleep, it could lead them to even messing up grading. If someone deserved an A but the teacher missed a few because they were sleepy and gave them a B the person would not be happy. This wouldn’t happen if school started later.
Although teachers being tired can effect why school should start later, eating a healthy breakfast is the most important reason why school should start later in the day. It’s proven that if you don’t eat breakfast, your brain doesn’t focus as much in school. As kids start growing up, they find it easier just to skip breakfast before school. They wake up in morning knowing they have to rush to catch the bus for school and just decide to skip breakfast. This would not happen though if school started later. Kids’ parents would be able to make them a big breakfast with grains, dairy, and fruit. They would get a proper breakfast and not just a granola bar from the cabinet. The kids’ grades would also improve and so would their attitude! Why would you not want that?
As you can see, there are a lot of reasons why school should start later. Kids can get way better grades, teachers can be really fun and cheery, and all the students can have a proper breakfast before school. I hope you consider this new opportunity to make school a fun place to be. Kids would actually want to go to school rather than dreading it. Hope you think about this!
Sincerely,
Kaitlin Bates
