Author’s Note: This is an ABAB poem about the conflict in the book, Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson. The purpose of the piece is to show word text and context in a poem about Speak.
Melinda is hiding something
But what is it you may ask?
It’s a secret, one that stings
It’s one she’s hiding behind a mask
A boy
She calls IT
Never a joy
That caused a conflict
She was attacked
Did you know?
She couldn’t react
She was to slow
He hurt her, and hurt her
Till he thought he was done
It was just a blur
He was drunk, just looking for some fun
She walked around depressed
As sad as a tree with no leaves
It's like she was obsessed
With not having any beliefs
She told no one
Which was a mistake
It hurt her inside a ton
As bad as a three earthquakes
The world seemed angry at her
It seemed that even the sun was glaring at her
But what could she do? transfer?
No, she couldn't do that, for sure.
She walked around depressed
As sad as a tree with no leaves
It's like she was obsessed
With not having any beliefs
She told no one
Which was a mistake
It hurt her inside a ton
As bad as a three earthquakes
The world seemed angry at her
It seemed that even the sun was glaring at her
But what could she do? transfer?
No, she couldn't do that, for sure.
Eventually, Melinda spilled her guts
And he found out
He gave her cuts
That made her shout
Now that I’ve wrote this poem
I know you want to read
The book about the girl
Who had to plead
