Where Is The Heart?

Authors Note: This is a piece about the character description about Novalee Nation from the book, Where the Heart Is. She is from the book, Where the Heart is by Billie Letts. In this piece I demonstrate figurative language and accurate word choice and content.

Hi, I'm Novalee Nation and I am a 17 year old teenage girl who’s 7 months pregnant and living at Wal-Mart. My stomach is so stretched out, it looks like 2 watermelons stuffed inside of my awful stomach. My hair is as dirty as mud in a hot summer day. I hate it.  My pale skin is as white as a ghost. I have to wear Wal-Mart clothes for god's sake! Gross! But there's nothing I can do.  Kick, kick, my babies goes, in my round stomach. The pain inside of me feels like I might die any second. How could I survive living in Wal-Mart while being pregnant? What am I going to do?

Something else you should know about me is that I am a teenage girl that ran away with her boyfriend.  I've never had a stable family; my mom even left me for a fake umpire.  My family was so messed up; we could be living in a mental hospital. I dropped everything and said I was done with my stupid family. My boyfriend and I, Willy Jack, ran off to California to find a great big house and start a life together. But everything changed in Oklahoma. Willy Jack was fed up with me and my ridiculous bladder, so he ditched me at Wal-Mart and went to California by himself. Willy Jack's words stung my ears and as I keep repeating them to myself, "Just go on, Novalee." She didn't except him to leave her, 7 months pregnant, but it happened.  It happened so fast, it was like a lightning bolt; everything destroyed in just a second. Willy Jack was never seen again. His brain obviously, was the size of a pea. He's such a jerk!

  1. I like the way you start off the essay. I also like the figurative language you used throughout the piece. Also the way you involve Willy Jack in this. It deserves a 10!
